Day 15

The Grace and Light of Jesus

Read John 8:1-30

Summary

  • Jesus defended a woman caught in adultery, challenging her accusers to cast the first stone only if they were without sin.

  • As Jesus waited for their response, the accusers felt convicted of their own sins and left one by one, leaving Jesus alone with the woman. Jesus then told the woman that He would not condemn her, but she must sin no more.

  • Then Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world," offering guidance and truth to those who would follow Him.

  • The Pharisees again challenged Jesus on His credentials and authority to make such an audacious claim. He defended his claim by explaining His unique relationship with the Father.

Reflect

Let’s focus on 8:1-11

  1. What was the motive of the Jewish leaders when they brought the adulterous woman to Jesus for His judgment? In what way were they trying to trap Him?

  2. How did Jesus respond to the Jewish leaders? Why were they reluctant to stone the woman?

  3. What was Jesus’ response to the woman? How did this response reveal His heart for sinners?

  4. Look at your own relationships with others. Are there people in your life to whom you need to show mercy or forgive? Do you have people whom you need to seek forgiveness from? Spend some time before the Lord to seek grace and guidance in mending any loose ends in strained relationships.
