Day 23
The Anointing, the King and the Grain of Wheat
Read John 12:1-36
Summary
3 Events Surrounding Jesus’ Triumphant Entry:
Mary anointed Jesus with expensive perfume, preparing Him for His burial. Judas objected, feigning concern for the poor while he was stealing from the money purse (vv. 1 - 8).
Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey as the Messianic King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy. The crowd exuberantly welcomed Him as their King (vv. 12-19).
In the presence of His disciples and some Greek seekers, Jesus openly predicted His death, teaching them that His subsequent glorification would be preceded by surrender and death (vv. 20-36).
Reflect
Let’s focus on vv. 23-26
1. What does Jesus teach about sacrifice, death and fruitfulness through the imagery of a grain of wheat? How did Jesus demonstrate this truth in His own life?
2. In vv. 25-26, Jesus teaches what true discipleship is. Are you willing to follow Jesus’ example and lose your life for God’s Kingdom? How can you start this journey of discipleship today? What must you first do?
