Day 28
The Promise of the Helper and the Gift of Peace
Read John 14:15-31
Summary
Jesus emphasised that the disciples’ love for Him would be demonstrated through their obedience to His commandments.
He promised to send the Holy Spirit (the Advocate) to be with His followers forever.
The Holy Spirit would teach them all things and remind them of all that Jesus had said.
Jesus left His peace with His disciples, a peace that the world could not offer.
Therefore, they should not be troubled or afraid, because of His abiding presence with them through the Holy Spirit.
Reflect
1. Look at v 21. How does one truly love Jesus? What will Jesus do for the one who loves Him? What does it mean for Jesus to manifest Himself to them?
2. Do you desire for Jesus and His Father to make their home in your life? How can you achieve that? (v 23)
3. In what areas of your life do you struggle to find peace? What can you do to receive this peace that Jesus offers? (v 27)

Jesus highlighted the Holy Spirit as a teacher, advocate and counsellor, emphasising His role in helping believers understand and live out the truth. The Holy Spirit provides clarity, reminds us of Jesus’ words, and works in believers to build a deeper intimacy with God. Hence, we need to lean on the Holy Spirit to grow in our relationship with God.
Reflect
4. Michael Hoff exhorts us to let the Holy Spirit teach us the Word. He also encourages us to learn our faith from the Christian community. How do we strike this balance between learning from the Spirit and the community?
Closing Prayer
Ask God to help you obey His commandments as your act of loving Him. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide, teach, and remind you of His truth. Invite Jesus to guard your heart and mind with His peace amidst life challenges.
