We are Called to Witness

Read John 15:18-27

Summary

• Jesus warned His followers that the world would hate them because it first hated Him.

• Believers did not belong to the world because Jesus had chosen them out of the world to be His own. Hence, the world hated them.

• Those who hated Jesus would also hate the Father. Unconsciously, they fulfilled what Scriptures had said about them: that they hated Jesus without cause.

• Despite their unbelief, Jesus would still send the Holy Spirit into the world to testify about Him. The disciples were also called to be His witnesses.

Reflect

1. Jesus warns us that the world hates us. How does His warning challenge or comfort you as you live in this hostile world?

2. In what ways has Jesus set you apart from the world? How then should you live your life as His witness? (1 Peter 2:11-12)

Faithfulness to Jesus comes with challenges, including facing rejection and persecution from the world. Choosing to abide in Christ has consequences, as the world has much to offer us in temporal things. It also means holding unto truths that may offend others, especially in a pluralistic society. Jesus’ works and teachings call for a response, leaving no room for neutrality. The Holy Spirit strengthens believers to testify boldly, even at personal cost.

3. What personal sacrifices might you need to make, when you faithfully bear witness to Jesus in your workplace and in your home?

Closing Prayer

Pray for courage to remain faithful to Jesus in the face of hostility. Ask for the Holy Spirit's strength to bear witness to Christ in love and humility to pre-believers.
