Day 31

The Advocate Will Come

Read John 16:1-5

Summary

  • Jesus warned His disciples about the upcoming persecution and their risk of falling away.

  • He explained that it was for their good that He was leaving, as the Holy Spirit would come in His place.

  • The Holy Spirit would do these things for the believers: guide them into truth, tell them about what Jesus said, declare the future and glorify Jesus.

  • The Spirit would also convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment.

  • Jesus also promised that the Holy Spirit would take what belonged to Jesus and His Father and made them known to the disciples.

  • In this passage, we have a glimpse of how the 3 persons in the Trinity work together in believers’ lives.

Reflect

1. Jesus teaches us that the Holy Spirit is our Helper, Advocate and Comforter. Think of adversities you had endured in the past. How did you fare in those dark times? Were you able to receive the Spirit’s wisdom, comfort and strength? Why were you able to do so or not do so?

2. How can you better prepare yourself to face tough times in the future with the help of the Holy Spirit?

The Church needs the Holy Spirit in every season, especially in difficult times. As Christians are called to be Christ’s witnesses, they need to depend on the Spirit to convict pre-believers of sin, righteousness and judgment.

Reflect

3. How can you partner with the Holy Spirit in witnessing for Christ in your home and workplace? Ask the Spirit on the concrete steps you can take.

Closing Prayer

Pray for greater sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Ask for courage to trust in His strength and wisdom when you face future trials.
